Getting Started with Music
David Jalbert grew up in Mascouche, Québec. His father was a guitarist, which sparked David's interest in music from a very young age. He loved the artist lifestyle and entered many music competitions while in elementary school.
As a kid, he was inspired by famous artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Quebec band Beau Dommage. In 1994, when he was a teenager, he started a punk rock band called Big Joe with two friends. After the band, he focused on finishing school but never stopped writing his own songs.
Building a Music Career
In 2000, David began entering music contests again. His big break came in 2004 at the MusiQualité competition in his hometown. He won two awards: one chosen by the audience and another by the judges. These wins helped him meet people in the music industry who could help him record his first album.
First Album: Des histoires
David worked with professionals to choose thirteen of his best songs for his first album, Des histoires (which means "Stories"). The album was released on April 15, 2008. To promote it, he performed at the famous FrancoFolies music festival in Montreal and then toured across Québec.
The song "Souvenir d'enfance" ("Childhood Memory") became a huge hit. It was played a lot on the radio and was even featured in a McDonald's commercial. By the fall of 2009, he had sold over 15,000 albums.
Second Album: Le journal
On May 4, 2010, David released his second album, Le journal ("The Journal"). It included popular songs like "Voyage" and "P'tit homme." The song "Voyage" was a major success, reaching the top of the music charts in Québec. He wrote the song "P'tit homme" ("Little Man") for his son, Félix.
In 2011, the album was nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Album at the ADISQ awards, a major music awards show in Québec. Le journal is his most successful album, and with his first two albums combined, he sold over 25,000 copies.
Third Album: Y'a pas de bon silence
David's third album, Y'a pas de bon silence ("There's No Good Silence"), came out on September 18, 2012. It featured the popular song "Hey Jack!", which he dedicated to his other son, Jacob. The album was one of the best-selling French-language albums in Canada that year.
In 2012, David also took part in a project to support mental well-being. His song "Ma mère disait" ("My Mother Used to Say") was part of a campaign to help people who are struggling, an effort led by the Quebec Association for Suicide Prevention.
