A Look Back: History of the Lilienfeld House

David L. Lilienfeld was born in Germany in 1836. He moved to Kalamazoo in 1859. There, he started successful businesses with his brother. He made cigars and sold drinks. He became an important person in the Kalamazoo business world.

In 1867, Mr. Lilienfeld bought the land where the house stands today. He built the current house in 1878. He lived in this beautiful home until he passed away in 1899.

After Mr. Lilienfeld, different people owned the house. In 1932, it became a funeral home. It stayed that way for many years, until 1985.

Louis and Annette Conti bought the house in 1985. They saved it from being torn down! They worked hard to restore it. They turned it into an inn and restaurant.

The house was empty for a short time in the early 2000s. It was then restored again. In 2007, it opened as a bed & breakfast.

Architectural Style: What the House Looks Like

The Lilienfeld House is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of brick. It shows off a Late Victorian style. The design mixes ideas from Queen Anne, Stick, and Eastlake architecture.

The house has tall, thin windows. These windows have sandstone sills and decorative tops. A wooden porch sits at the front of the house.

Some cool features include stone window hoods with carved designs. There are also fancy wooden decorations in the gables. The chimney stack is made of special panel-brick. The brickwork on the house has been painted.
