Early Life and Family Name
David Marjoribanks was born on April 2, 1797. He was the fourth son of Sir John Marjoribanks, 1st Baronet. His father was a Member of Parliament (MP) and also the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. The Marjoribanks family had been in Edinburgh for a long time.
In 1834, David Marjoribanks married Marianne-Sarah. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Haggeston. Marianne-Sarah also inherited money and property from her mother, Margaret. This property was in a place called Ladykirk. After their marriage, David changed his last name to Robertson. He did this to keep his wife's family property and money.
A Career in Business and Politics
David Robertson worked as a stockbroker. His company focused on investments from Mexico. He later became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the British Parliament. He represented the area of Berwickshire. He was a member of the Liberal political party. He served as an MP from 1859 to 1873. His brother, Charles Marjoribanks, had also been an MP for the same area.
Besides being an MP, David Robertson also held another important position. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire from 1860 to 1873. A Lord Lieutenant is the Queen's official representative in a county. In 1873, he received a special honor. He was made a peer, which means he was given a noble title. He became Baron Marjoribanks. He chose his original family name for this new title.
Later Life and Legacy
Lord Marjoribanks passed away in June 1873. He was 76 years old. This happened only a few days after he received his new title. He is buried at Ladykirk. His family's special burial place is also nearby in Coldstream.
Sadly, his sons had passed away before him. Because of this, his title of Baron Marjoribanks ended when he died. The Ladykirk property remained with his family through his female descendants.
