Sir John Marjoribanks (born 1763, died 1833) was an important Scottish politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) and served twice as the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. A Lord Provost is like the mayor of a city.

Early Life and Family

Sir John Marjoribanks was born in Bordeaux, France, on January 13, 1763. His father, Edward Marjoribanks, was a well-known wine merchant. His mother was Grizel Stewart.

Sir John came from a very successful family. His grandfather, Archibald Stewart, was also a Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Sir John had several brothers who achieved great things. One brother, Campbell, became the head of the East India Company. Another brother, Stewart, owned a shipping company and became an MP. His brother Edward was a partner in a famous bank called Coutts & Co. The family moved back to Scotland around 1770.

Political Career

Sir John Marjoribanks started his career as a captain in the Coldstream Guards, a famous army regiment. Later, he became involved in politics.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Buteshire in 1812. In 1814, he became the Lord Provost of Edinburgh for the first time. He played a key role in getting the Regent Bridge built in Edinburgh. This bridge was an important construction project for the city.

In 1815, he was given the special title of a Baronet. This means he became "Sir John Marjoribanks, 1st Baronet." He lived at 12 Charlotte Square in Edinburgh at this time.

He was elected as an MP again in 1818, this time for Berwickshire. He served in Parliament until 1826. He also served a second term as Lord Provost of Edinburgh in 1825.

Sir John Marjoribanks passed away at his home in Berwickshire on February 5, 1833, at the age of 70.

Family Life

Sir John Marjoribanks married Allison Ramsay on April 15, 1791. Allison was the eldest daughter of William Ramsay. Together, they had nine children: four sons and five daughters.

  • Sir William Marjoribanks (born 1792), who became the 2nd Baronet after his father. He was a captain in the East India Company navy.
  • Charles (born 1794), who worked for the East India Company in China and later became an MP for Berwickshire.

  • David (born 1797), who became a successful merchant and was later given the title of Baron Marjoribanks.
  • Rachael, who married Josiah Nesbit.
  • Agnes, who married Sir Edward Poore.
  • Mary, who married John Murray Nasmyth.
  • Susan, who married Charles Craigie Halkett.
