David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss facts for kids
David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss (born 6 September 1610 – died July 1679) was an important army officer in Scotland. He was the only son of John Wemyss, 1st Earl of Wemyss and Jean Gray.
Early Life and Family
David Wemyss was born into a noble family in Scotland. His father, John Wemyss, was the first Earl of Wemyss. David was the only son, which meant he would inherit his father's titles and lands.
David Wemyss married three times during his life. His first wife was Anna Balfour. They had a daughter named Jean Wemyss. Later, he married Helenor Fleming, and then Margaret Leslie. With Margaret, he had another daughter, also named Margaret. This daughter was the only one who lived longer than him.
A Military Leader
Before he became the Earl of Wemyss, David was known as Lord Elcho. This was a special title he held from 1633 to 1649. During this time, he became a military leader.
He led a group of soldiers called a regiment. These soldiers were from Fife, a region in Scotland, and they were part of the Scottish army. In August 1640, his regiment marched all the way to Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
Battles and Challenges
David Wemyss faced some tough challenges as an army commander. In September 1644, he led about 6,000 men into battle at a place called Tippermuir. However, his forces were defeated by an opposing army led by a famous commander named Montrose.
He faced Montrose's forces again in August 1645 at the Battle of Kilsyth. Even though he was serving as a senior commander alongside Lieutenant-General William Baillie, his side was once again defeated by Montrose.
Later Life and Legacy
David Wemyss became the 2nd Earl of Wemyss in 1649, after his father passed away. He spent his later years at Wemyss Castle in Fife. He worked hard to improve and develop the lands and estates around the castle.
He died in July 1679. Since his daughter Margaret was the only one of his children to outlive him, she inherited his titles and all the family estates. She became the 3rd Countess of Wemyss.
