Margaret Wemyss, 3rd Countess of Wemyss facts for kids
Margaret Wemyss, 3rd Countess of Wemyss and Countess of Cromarty (born January 1, 1659 – died March 11, 1705) was an important Scottish noblewoman. She held high titles in Scotland, which meant she had a special rank and influence in society.
Early Life and Family
Margaret Wemyss was born in Scotland in 1659. Her father was David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss. Her mother was Margaret Leslie. Margaret was the youngest of sixteen children. Sadly, most of her brothers and sisters died very young. Only Margaret and her older half-sister, Lady Jean Wemyss, lived to adulthood.
Becoming a Countess
Usually, the oldest daughter would inherit the family's titles. But for special reasons, Margaret was chosen over her older sister, Jean. Lady Jean Wemyss disagreed with this decision. The case was even discussed in the Scottish Parliament. This was like a big meeting where important laws and decisions were made for Scotland. In the end, Margaret won the case. She officially became the Countess of Wemyss in 1679.
Marriages and Children
Margaret Wemyss married twice in her life. Her first marriage was on March 28, 1672. She was only 13 years old at the time. She married her cousin, Sir James Wemyss of Caskieberry. He later became known as Lord Burntisland. They had three children who lived to be adults:
- Lady Anna (born 1675 – died 1702). She married David Melville, 3rd Earl of Leven.
- Lady Margaret (born 1677 – died 1763). She married David Carnegie, 4th Earl of Northesk.
- David (born 1678 – died 1720). He later became the 4th Earl of Wemyss.
Lord Burntisland passed away in 1682. After his death, the Countess Margaret married again. Her second husband was Sir George Mackenzie of Tarbat. He later became the Earl of Cromartie.
