David Williams (born in 1709 – died 5 April 1784) was a special kind of church leader called an independent minister. He was also a schoolteacher. One of his students was another famous person named David Williams, who was a philosopher. Sometimes, people get the two David Williams mixed up!
Who Was David Williams?
David Williams was born in a place called Pwll-y-pant, which is near Caerphilly in Wales. He decided to study to become a minister, which is like a pastor or priest who leads a church. He went to a school called the Carmarthen Academy to learn.
A Life in the Church
In 1734, after finishing his studies, David Williams became the minister of a church, or chapel, in Cardiff. A few years later, in 1739, he took charge of a brand new chapel called "Watford."
At Watford, he even welcomed a well-known religious leader named Howell Harris. However, David Williams and Howell Harris later had a disagreement. Because of this, the people in Williams's church who followed the Methodist way of thinking decided to form their own separate group.
Family Life
David Williams was married twice. His first wife, Mary, passed away in 1745. He then married another woman, who was also named Mary. One of his sons, Thomas Williams, later followed in his father's footsteps and became the minister at the Watford chapel after him.
