Dayhoit is a small place in Harlan County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community," which means it's not officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Dayhoit has its own post office and a special code called a ZIP code, which is 40824.

In the year 2000, about 458 people lived in the area covered by Dayhoit's ZIP code.

A Tale of Two Names

Dayhoit has an interesting story behind its name. It is also known as Wilhoit. This is because of a disagreement that happened a long time ago.

How the Names Started

First, there was a post office in the area. It was named after the Day family, so it was called Dayhoit. Later, a man named Roy Wilhoit, who worked with coal, wanted the new train station to be named after him. He insisted that the railroad call the station Wilhoit.

The Compromise

This led to a long argument about what the place should be called. Finally, in 1930, the Post Office Department decided to find a middle ground. They chose to call the post office Dayhoit. However, the railroad continued to use the name Wilhoit for the station.

Today, if you look at maps, you might see the place listed as Wilhoit, but it will often say "(Dayhoit PO)" next to it. This reminds everyone of its unique history and how it got its two names.
