What Makes Dayton View Historic?

In 1984, the Dayton View area became part of the National Register of Historic Places. This register lists places that are important to American history. The district's official boundaries are Broadway, Harvard Boulevard, Superior Avenue, and Salem Avenue. Being on this list helps protect the neighborhood's unique historical character.

A Vision for a Grand Neighborhood

The special look and layout of Dayton View came from the ideas of James Oliver Arnold. He owned a farm in the area, and his old farmhouse, built in 1832, still stands today. James Arnold dreamed of a beautiful neighborhood. He imagined wide streets lined with trees and large, impressive homes. These homes would be set back from the street, giving them a grand appearance.

Over time, many of Arnold's original elm trees were lost. However, new efforts are helping to replant trees. This is bringing back Arnold's original dream for the neighborhood. For a long time, Dayton View was known as one of Dayton's most important and well-known neighborhoods.
