Deborah Clashin (born 1969), also known as Debbie Clashin, is a talented Hopi-Tewa artist. She is famous for making beautiful pottery. She belongs to the Tobacco Clan of the Hopi-Tewa people.

Debbie Clashin's pottery is truly special. She first showed her work at a competition in Flagstaff, Arizona. This was at the annual Hopi Show at the Museum of Northern Arizona. She won a 1st Place ribbon there. She felt this award was a way to honor her teacher, Dianna Tahbo.

In 2015, she entered a special bowl called a piki bowl. This was at the Santa Fe Indian Market art show. She won another 1st Place ribbon for her useful pottery.

Debbie's pottery is so good that it is in many famous museums. You can find her work at the National Museum of the American Indian. It is also at the Fralin Museum of Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Other museums include the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The Seattle Art Museum also has her beautiful pieces.

She has won important awards. One big award is the Helen Naha Memorial Award for Hopi Pottery. She received this at the Santa Fe Indian Market.

About Debbie's Life and Work

Debbie Clashin's parents are Lorena and Morris Clashin Sr. She has many cousins who are also artists. These include Dianna Tahbo, Mark Tahbo, Dorothy Ami, and Larson Goldtooth. She grew up around pottery making. But she only started learning the craft in 2010. Her cousin, Dianna Tahbo, taught her.

How She Makes Pottery

Debbie loves to create certain shapes. She enjoys making large jars with small openings. She also likes to make flattened seed pots. Her favorite designs are old Hopi patterns. She especially likes to paint birds.

Debbie uses traditional methods for her pottery. She builds her pots by hand, using coils of clay. She uses native clay and special colored liquid called "slips." Then, she fires her pottery outdoors. This is a very old and respected way of making pottery.
