Deborah Phillips was born in 1965 in Dundee, a city in Scotland. Art runs in her family, as her father, Douglas Phillips, was also a Scottish artist.

How Deborah Started Painting Young

Deborah showed her artistic talent very early. When she was only fourteen years old, in 1979, her paintings were shown for the first time. This happened at two important art exhibitions: the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. It was a big achievement for someone so young!

Her Art Education and First Jobs

After high school, Deborah continued to study art. She graduated with honors from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1987. The very next year, she began working as a merchandise designer for the National Trust for Scotland. This job involved creating designs for products like souvenirs and gifts. In 1993, she moved to Historic Scotland, where she managed merchandise for three years. Her design work was so good that it appeared in well-known magazines such as Art Business Today and Artists and Illustrators.
