Denise "Dee" Barnes is an American rapper and TV host. She is also known by her stage names Sista D and D Zire. Dee Barnes was part of the hip hop duo Body & Soul. She also hosted a popular hip hop TV show called Pump It Up! on the Fox network.

Early Life and Radio Career

Dee Barnes grew up in New York City. She became interested in hip hop music at a young age. She would listen to older kids practicing in the park. She also went to concerts at the local roller rink.

Dee Barnes started working in radio as an intern. She helped out on The DJ Red Alert show at 98.7 Kiss FM. After high school, she moved to Los Angeles in the late 1980s. There, she joined the radio station 1580 KDAY.

Music Career

In Los Angeles, Dee Barnes formed a music group called Body & Soul. Her friend Rose Hutchinson was also in the group. In 1989, they released their first song, "Dance to the Drummer's Beat." This song used parts of an older song by Herman Kelly and Life.

Body & Soul also released another song called "We Can Do This." They appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Marked for Death. In 1990, Dee Barnes joined other artists to record "We're All in the Same Gang." This song was produced by Dr. Dre. It was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Hosting Pump It Up!

In 1989, when she was 19, Dee Barnes became the host of Pump It Up!. This was a new hip hop show on the Fox TV network. On the show, she interviewed many famous artists. She described the show's style as very natural and real.

At the same time, Dee Barnes was also studying journalism. She felt it was important to record the history of rap and hip hop music. The show Pump It Up! aired from 1989 to 1991.

Other Projects

In 1991, Dee Barnes co-hosted a concert called The Motherlode. This event took place in Los Angeles. It was special because it featured only women rap artists.

Later that year, Barnes hosted a TV special called Sisters in the Name of Rap. This show featured live performances by female artists. Famous rappers like Queen Latifah and MC Lyte were part of the show. It was first shown on pay-per-view TV. Then, it was released on VHS tape.
