College Football Days
From 1967 to 1970, Martin played college football for the Kentucky State Thorobreds. This team was part of Kentucky State College. He was recognized as an All-American player by the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper.

He also recovered two fumbles, which means he picked up the ball after an offensive player dropped it. The Saints finished that season with four wins, eight losses, and two ties.
Injury and Release
In 1972, Martin was placed on injured reserve on September 13. This meant he could not play for the entire 1972 season due to an injury. The Saints later released him from the team on July 16, 1973.
