Deep Green Resistance (DGR) is a group focused on protecting the environment. They believe that modern industrial society is the biggest threat to nature. DGR suggests that this way of life should be stopped. They think we should return to a simpler time, before large-scale farming and factories.
Even though DGR works openly, they encourage others to use secret and sometimes violent methods. These methods could include damaging buildings or equipment. DGR believes that such actions could cause big changes and lead to the end of industrial society. Other environmental groups often disagree with DGR. They criticize DGR's strong views and some of its leaders' controversial opinions. Some groups, including Native American organizations, have chosen not to work with DGR because of these disagreements.
What DGR Believes
In a book from 2011 called Deep Green Resistance, the authors Lierre Keith, Derrick Jensen, and Aric McBay shared their main ideas. They wrote that modern industrial society cannot continue without harming the planet. They believe it must be stopped quickly to protect all living things on Earth.
DGR wants to end industrial society. They suggest going back to a way of life that existed before large-scale farming. This means living more simply and closer to nature.
How DGR Acts
DGR itself works as an open group. Since 2019, its members promise not to use violence. However, DGR encourages other groups to use secret and sometimes violent actions. These actions might include damaging important buildings or systems. DGR is one of the few environmental groups that says extreme violence can sometimes be right.
A common idea in DGR's writings is that damaging things could cause a chain reaction. This could lead to the end of industrial society. Because DGR supports actions like sabotage and violence, it is seen as a group that believes in a big, sudden change. DGR and some other groups share similar ideas about how to bring about major changes in society.
In 2017, DGR tried to get the Colorado River recognized as a person in a lawsuit. This would give the river legal rights. However, the lawsuit was not successful and was dismissed in 2019.
