Defense of the Ancients (often called DotA) is a very popular computer game. It started as a special map made by fans for the game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. This means it wasn't officially made or supported by the company that created Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment.
DotA is a team strategy game. Players usually play in teams of three against three, or five against five. The goal is to work together to win!
Over the years, DotA became super famous. It was even played in big tournaments around the world, like BlizzCon and the Asian World Cyber Games. Many people called it one of the most popular free game mods ever. Later, a company called Valve Corporation made a new game inspired by it, called Dota 2.
How to Play DotA
The main goal in DotA is to get into the other team's base. Once there, you need to destroy their main building, which is called the "Ancient." The team that destroys the enemy's Ancient wins the game!
Minions and Towers
Every 30 seconds, your team's main building creates small computer-controlled units called "minions." These minions automatically walk towards the enemy base. They attack any enemy units or buildings they see. Minions are helpful because they can fight alongside you and help push into the enemy's territory.
The Ancient is protected by strong "towers" and other buildings. You must destroy these towers first. If the towers are still standing, you cannot damage the Ancient. So, working together to take down towers is very important.
Heroes and Abilities
In DotA, each player controls a special character called a "hero." There are over one hundred different heroes to choose from. Each hero has unique powers and abilities.
As the game goes on, your hero becomes stronger. You earn "experience" by defeating enemy units and heroes. Gaining experience helps your hero level up and learn new, more powerful abilities. You also collect "gold" during the game. You can use gold to buy powerful items that make your hero even stronger.
Heroes are often grouped into different types based on what they are good at:
- Tanks: These heroes have a lot of health and can take a lot of damage. They are good at leading the charge into battle.
- Nukers: These heroes have spells that deal a lot of damage very quickly. They can often defeat enemies with just a few powerful attacks.
- Carries: These heroes start weaker but become very powerful later in the game. They are often the main damage dealers in big team fights.
- Supports: These heroes help their teammates with spells. They might heal allies, protect them, or make enemies weaker.
The game map is designed to be fair for both teams. It is balanced and looks the same on both sides.
