Dekoven is a small place in Union County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is a town that does not have its own local government, unlike a city. Dekoven was also once a busy coal town, a place where many people worked in coal mines.
History of Dekoven
How Dekoven Started
Dekoven began its story in 1843. A person from Flanders, Belgium, started a coal mining business there. This new community was named DeKoven. The name comes from the Flemish language. It means "a camp or village among the hills." This name perfectly described the area.
The Post Office Years
As the community grew, it needed ways to connect with other places. A post office was opened in Dekoven in 1871. This helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years. However, it was eventually closed down after 1938.
