The Del Mar Antiques + Art + Design Show is a special event where people can see and buy old and beautiful items. It takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California. This show is the oldest indoor antique show in California that is still run by the same family!

The Story of the Show

This amazing show started way back in 1961. It was created by Joseph and Bettye Grimes. They used to organize many shows across Southern California. These events were sometimes called 'Calendar Shows'.

The Grimes family used to say their shows had "everything from tin to Tiffany". This meant you could find all sorts of treasures, from simple old items to very fancy and valuable ones. Today, their son, Michael Grimes, is in charge of the show.

What Happens at the Show

Up to 7,000 people often visit the Del Mar Antiques + Art + Design Show. Sometimes, you might even see people dressed in fun costumes! Members of groups like the San Diego Costume Guild and the Red Hat Society have attended in their special outfits.

Each year, the show has a cool theme. For example, in 2010, the theme was "Masquerade: A Venice Carnivale at Del Mar". This made the show feel like a big, fancy party! In 2007, Michael Grimes also put on a "Wild West Expo". A newspaper called Today's Vintage said it was like the "Old West starring alongside traditional antiques".

Finding Treasures at the Show

This show is the biggest indoor antique show south of San Francisco. It brings together more than 100 antique dealers. These dealers come from all over the western United States. They bring many unique items for people to discover.

Even when the economy was a bit tough in 2009, the show still had many exhibitors. Over the next two years, even more dealers joined, showing how popular the event is.

In 2010, Michael Grimes also organized another event at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It was called The Green Meets Green Expo. The San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper wrote that this expo was "where old and new converge with an eco-friendly theme". This means it mixed old items with new ideas about being kind to the environment.
