Delaware Bay (New Zealand) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Delaware Bay is a beautiful curve in the coastline of New Zealand's South Island. It's located east of Pepin Island and north of the city of Nelson. This bay is actually a smaller part of a much bigger area of water called Tasman Bay / Te Tai-o-Aorere.

How Delaware Bay Got Its Name

Delaware Bay has an interesting story behind its name. It's named after a ship called the Delaware. This ship was a type of sailing vessel known as a brig.

The Brig Delaware

The Delaware was a brand new ship. It was built and ready for its very first journey. This first trip is often called a "maiden voyage." In 1863, the Delaware set sail from Nelson, heading towards another town called Napier.

A Dramatic Rescue

Sadly, the Delaware sank during its maiden voyage right here in the bay. But this event is not just remembered for the sinking. It's mostly remembered for the amazing rescue efforts that followed. A group of local Māori bravely stepped in to help. They worked hard to rescue the people on board the sinking ship. Their actions were truly heroic and saved many lives.
