Delta is a ghost town in Coahoma County, Mississippi, United States.

Once a thriving port on the Mississippi River, Delta today is covered by farmland. A part of the Mississippi Levee also covers the area. Nothing remains of the original settlement.

History of Delta

A New County Seat

In 1842, Delta became an important place. It was chosen as the new county seat for Coahoma County. This meant it was the main town where the county government was located. Before this, the county seat was in a town called Port Royal.

Growing into a Busy Town

Just two years later, in 1844, Delta was carefully mapped out. New plots of land were created for homes and businesses. The town quickly grew. About 700 people lived there. Delta became a very busy port for steamboats on the Mississippi River.

In 1848, Delta officially became an incorporated town. This meant it had its own local government.

The Great Flood and Moving On

However, 1848 also brought a big challenge. The Mississippi River flooded the town. This flood was so severe that many people had to leave their homes. They moved to a nearby town called Friars Point.

Because of the flood, the county seat had to move again. In 1850, it was officially moved from Delta to Friars Point.

Delta Becomes a Ghost Town

Even though the county seat moved, a post office still operated in Delta. It served the area from 1840 until 1890. But by 1890, the town of Delta had completely disappeared. Today, there are no buildings or signs left of the original settlement.
