Demetria Renee Tucker is a special librarian who works with families and young people at the Newport News Public Library. She is well-known for creating fun and helpful programs for kids and teens. In 2013, she received a big honor at the White House for her amazing work with the Pearl Bailey Library Youth Program. This program helped young people learn more about books and become active parts of their library.

She also won the Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American Library Association in 2013. Before that, in 2007, she was named Teacher of the Year at Forest Park Elementary School in Roanoke, Virginia.

Demetria Renee Tucker was born in Greenville, North Carolina. Her parents were William A. Tucker and Helen Hemby Tucker. She grew up with four brothers and sisters.

Her Education Journey

Demetria Tucker went to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1972. She is also a member of the Lambda Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Later, she decided to study library science. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science. In 1978, she earned her Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. Her old school recognized her achievements with their Distinguished Alumna Award in 2014.

Her Career Helping Others

Demetria Tucker has dedicated many years to helping people through libraries and schools. She worked for the Roanoke public library system for a long time, from 1972 until 2004. After that, she started working for the City of Roanoke Public Schools. Since 2008, she has been a Senior Family and Youth Librarian at the Newport News Public Library. She continues to create wonderful programs that inspire young people to read and learn.
