Demmus Hentze (born December 4, 1923 – died January 3, 2016) was an important politician and lawyer from the Faroe Islands. He is best known for serving as the Finance Minister for the Faroe Islands from 1975 to 1981.

Who Was Demmus Hentze?

Demmus Hentze was born in Sandoy, a beautiful island in the Faroe Islands. He grew up there before moving to Tórshavn, the capital city.

Early Life and Education

After finishing his first school, Demmus went to the newly opened High School in Tórshavn. He graduated in 1942. During World War II, it was hard to travel between the Faroe Islands and Denmark. This was because the Faroe Islands were occupied by the UK, and Denmark was occupied by Germany.

So, Demmus had to wait until the war ended to continue his studies. He moved to Denmark and studied law at the University of Copenhagen. He finished his law degree in 1952.

Becoming a Lawyer

After becoming a lawyer, Demmus Hentze was allowed to argue cases in the Danish High Court. He later opened his own law firm in 1981. It was called Advokatskrivstovan Hentze. He worked there with his daughter, Turið Debes Hentze, until 2010.

A Career in Politics

Demmus Hentze represented his hometown of Sandoy in the Løgting, which is the Faroese Parliament. He was a member twice. His first term was from 1966 to 1974. He then served again from 1978 to 1980.

He was a member of the People's Party. From 1975 to 1981, Demmus Hentze held a very important job. He was the Finance Minister for the Faroe Islands. This means he was in charge of the country's money and economy.

Demmus Hentze passed away in Tórshavn on January 3, 2016.

His Family Life

Demmus Hentze came from a large family in Sandur. His parents were Johan Petur Hentze and Sunneva Clementsen. He was one of nine children!

He was married to Helena Debes. Together, they had three daughters:

  • Turið Debes Hentze, who became a lawyer like her father.
  • Bergljót Debes Hentze, who works for Kringvarp Føroya, the Faroese national broadcasting company.
  • Anna Debes Henze, who is a psychologist.
