The community of Democrat got its unique name from a post office that was set up there in 1892. The person in charge of this post office, named Isom Sergent, was a strong supporter of the Democratic Party. Because of his political views, he decided to name the post office "Democrat," and the community eventually took on the same name. The post office helped people send and receive mail for many years, finally closing down in 1985.
