On September 26, 1979, Denise Mercherson made history. She was officially allowed to practice law in Utah. This made her the very first African American woman to become a lawyer in the state. Her achievement opened doors for many others.

By 1986, Mercherson moved back to Chicago. She started her own law office there. She continued her work as a lawyer.
