Exploring Dennis Beaches
Dennis is famous for its many beaches. Each beach has its own story. Some are named after people, and some after what they were used for. These beaches offer great places to swim, relax, and explore.
Beaches on the Bay Side
The northern side of Dennis has beaches that face Cape Cod Bay. The water here is often calmer and warmer. This makes them great for families.
Chapin Memorial Beach
Chapin Memorial Beach was once called Black Flats. This was because of its dark sands and wide, flat areas that appear at low tide. The beach was named after George H. Chapin. He was a real estate developer. He gave the land to the town after World War II.
Corporation Beach
Corporation Beach is sometimes called Nobscussett Beach. It got its name from the Nobscussett Point Pier Corporation. This beach is on the east side of Nobscussett Point. The name "Nobscussett" might come from an old Native American word. It could mean "at the end of the rock."
Mayflower Beach
The town bought Mayflower Beach in 1977. It was named after a condominium complex that was planned but never finished.
Bayview Beach
Bayview Beach is located at the other end of Mayflower Beach. It has a parking lot just for people who live in Dennis. A nearby road, Hippogriffe Road, is named after a large sailing ship. This ship was built a long time ago, in 1652.
Cold Storage Beach
Cold Storage Beach got its name from old buildings nearby. In the early 1900s, these buildings were used to keep fish cold.
Beaches on the Ocean Side
The southern side of Dennis faces Nantucket Sound. These beaches often have bigger waves. They are popular for swimming and sunbathing.
Glendon Road Beach
Glendon Road Beach is named after Hubert Glennon. He was a Marine officer who later coached rowing at Columbia University. Mr. Glennon donated this beach to the village.
Peter Haigis Beach
To the west of Glendon Road is Peter Haigis Beach. This land was given to the town by Peter Haigis's widow.
Inman Road Beach
Inman Road Beach is named after the Inman family. They lived near Lower County Road.
Raycroft Beach
Raycroft Beach was named after Louis B. Raycroft. He often spent his summers near Old Wharf Road and Sea Street.
Aunt Julia Ann Road Beach
Aunt Julia Ann Road, and the beach with the same name, is on the Bass River. It is across from the Bass River Golf Club. This beach is named after Julia Ann Baker.
West Dennis Beach
West Dennis Beach was once known as Davis Beach. The road along the beach is still called Davis Beach Road. Charles Henry Davis sold this beach to the town in the early 1900s.
South Village Beach
South Village Beach was named after a small fishing village. This village was once located in West Dennis and was called South Village.
Freshwater Beaches
Dennis also has two beaches on a freshwater pond. These are great for swimming in calm water.
Princess Beach and Scargo Beach
Both Princess Beach and Scargo Beach are located on Scargo Lake. This lake is on the northern side of Dennis. They offer a different kind of beach experience away from the ocean waves.
