Deon Terrell Miles is an American chemist and a professor at Sewanee: The University of the South. He teaches chemistry and studies tiny particles called nanoparticles. He also works on new ways to teach chemistry to students.

Early Life and Education

Deon Miles was born in Gary, Indiana. He loved chemistry from a young age. He went to Wabash College to study chemistry. He graduated in 1997.

While at Wabash, he won many awards for his chemistry studies. He was also the manager of the basketball team. After college, he gave a special speech at his graduation ceremony.

Later, he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, he worked with a famous scientist named Royce W. Murray. He earned his advanced degree by studying how to make special nanoparticles.

Research and Teaching Chemistry

In 2002, Professor Miles joined Sewanee: The University of the South. He focuses on making new kinds of nanoparticles. These are super tiny particles that can be used in many ways. He also finds new and fun ways to teach chemistry.

At Sewanee, Professor Miles created a unique class. It was all about the science of food and how chemistry works in cooking. Students learned how ingredients change when they are cooked.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools had to close. Professor Miles helped students learn from home. He made special kits for them. These kits taught students about spectroscopy and chromatography. These are ways to study light and separate mixtures.

Personal Life

Deon Miles is married and has two children. He is also a deacon at the Silverdale Baptist Church.
