The Department for Environment and Water (DEW) is a government department in South Australia. It works for the Government of South Australia. DEW was created on 1 July 2012. It was formed by joining two older departments: the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Department for Water. Back then, it was called the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR).
On 22 March 2018, its name changed to the Department for Environment and Water (DEW). This department helps manage South Australia's natural resources. This means looking after things like land, water, and wildlife. Its main goal is to make sure these resources are used wisely and can last for a long time. It also works to make the state's natural environment healthier and stronger.
How it Started
Recent Changes
After the state election in 2018, the Liberal Party won. Because of this, the department's name changed. On 2 March 2018, it officially became the Department for Environment and Water (DEW).
A Look Back: How the Environment Department Grew
The way South Australia manages its environment has changed a lot over the years. Different government groups have been in charge of protecting nature.
- In 1971, a new group called the Department of Environment and Conservation was formed. It brought together parts of the Museum Department and the State Planning Office.
- Later, in 1975, this group changed its name to the Department for the Environment. It also joined with the Botanic Garden Department.
- Over the next few decades, this department kept changing. It merged with other groups and changed its name several times. These changes helped it take on more responsibilities. For example, it started looking after land management and Aboriginal affairs.
- In 1999, it was known as the Department for Environment and Heritage.
- By 2010, it was renamed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources again.
- Finally, on 1 July 2012, it joined with the former Department of Water. This created the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources. This big change added water management to its main tasks.
