Derbhle Crotty facts for kids
Derbhle Crotty is a talented actress from Ireland. She was born in County Cavan in 1968.
She first studied law at UCD. While there, she joined a drama group called Dramsoc. This sparked her interest in acting. She then decided to study performance at the Samuel Beckett Centre, which is part of Trinity College Dublin.
A Career on Stage
Derbhle became a key actress at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. She was a member of the company from 1994 to 2009. During this time, she acted in many plays.
One of her first big roles at the Abbey was in The Mai in 1994. This play was written by Marina Carr. Later, she played the main character in Carr's play Portia Coughlan. She also played the lead role in Katie Roche. This play was written by Teresa Deevy in the 1930s.
Derbhle has also worked a lot in London. She has performed in plays at the Royal National Theatre and with the RSC. These are two very famous theatre companies.
Awards and Recognition
Derbhle has won important awards for her acting. In 2008, she won an Irish Times Theatre Awards for Best Actress. This was for her role as Masha in Three Sisters at the Abbey Theatre.
She won the award again in 2015. This time, it was for her amazing performance as King Henry IV. This play was part of the Druid Shakespeare series by the Druid Theatre Company.
