The Derby Silk Mill, also known as the Derby Industrial Museum, is a special museum in Derby, England. It teaches visitors about industry and history. This museum is built on the very spot where Lombe's Mill, a famous silk mill, once stood.
Lombe's Mill is an important part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The museum first opened its doors on November 29, 1974. It was called Derby's Industrial Museum back then. In 2016, a big project started to make the museum even better. It cost £17 million! The museum was planned to reopen in autumn 2020 with a new name: the Museum of Making.
History
The building was changed to become Derby's Industrial Museum. It first opened on November 29, 1974. This museum showed how things were made and how people worked in the past.
The Derby City Council decided to close the museum for a short time on April 3, 2015. This was done to help pay for the big changes planned for the Silk Mill museum and other museums in the city. The museum was closed so that it could be redeveloped and improved. It was expected to reopen after about two years.
What is a Silk Mill?
A silk mill is a factory where silk thread is made. Silk is a very strong and smooth material. It comes from silkworms. In the past, silk mills were important places where many people worked. They helped make clothes and other items from silk. The Derby Silk Mill was one of the first modern factories in the world.
The Museum of Making
The Derby Silk Mill is now known as the Museum of Making. This new name shows its focus on creativity and making things. The museum helps people learn about Derby's long history of making. It explores how things are designed, engineered, and built. Visitors can see old machines and learn about new technologies. It's a place to get inspired and discover how ideas become reality.
