Derek Jones' Music Journey
Early Years as a Musician
Derek Jones was born in Lake Forest, California. He first learned to play the saxophone. But he soon switched to playing the guitar. He loved listening to bands like Manowar, Blink-182, and Slipknot.
When he was a teenager, he started his own local bands. They played small shows. By the time he was 19, he went on his first music tour.
Playing with A Smile from the Trenches
In 2007, Derek became a member of the band A Smile from the Trenches. They released their first music collection, an EP, in June 2007. That same year, the band got to play at the Vans Warped Tour.
In 2009, they released their first full album. It was called Leave the Gambling for Vegas. On this album, they even covered a song by Lady Gaga called "Bad Romance." In May 2010, Derek left the band. He joined a new band called Falling in Reverse. A Smile from the Trenches broke up later that year.
Joining Falling in Reverse
Derek Jones was part of the first group of musicians for Falling in Reverse in 2008. At that time, the band's singer, Ronnie Radke, was not available. So, the band only recorded demo songs.
In May 2010, Derek moved to Las Vegas. This was to fully commit to Falling in Reverse. The band waited for Ronnie Radke to return in December 2010.
Their first album, Fashionably Late, came out on June 18, 2013. It reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 music chart. The band released their third album, Just Like You, on February 24, 2015. Their latest album, Coming Home, was released on April 7, 2017.
Derek Jones was the only original member of Falling in Reverse, besides Ronnie Radke, until his death in 2020. He played on every album the band released.
Derek's Life and Passing
In 2015, Derek got engaged to Christina Cetta. In March 2019, Christina was diagnosed with cancer. Derek started a special fundraiser to help pay for her medical care. The band also gave special shirts to fans who donated.
Sadly, Christina passed away on November 19, 2019. Because of this, Falling in Reverse had to cancel their fall tour.
Derek Jones passed away on April 21, 2020. His bandmate, Ronnie Radke, shared the sad news online. Later, in Ronnie Radke's book, it was shared that Derek's passing was due to a subdural hematoma.
