Derek Ogbeide's High School Journey
Derek started his high school basketball career in Toronto, Canada. He played for Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School during his freshman and sophomore years. Later, he moved to Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Georgia, for his junior and senior years.
Amazing Senior Year
In his final year at Pebblebrook, Derek was outstanding. He scored nearly 15 points per game. He also grabbed over 10 rebounds and blocked about 4 or 5 shots per game. His excellent performance earned him recognition as one of the best players in his state.
Playing for the Georgia Bulldogs
After high school, Derek went on to play college basketball. He joined the University of Georgia team, the Georgia Bulldogs, from 2015 to 2019.
College Highlights
During his first year, Derek faced a shoulder injury. Despite this, he quickly became a key player. He was second on his team in both rebounds and blocked shots. In his sophomore year, he started almost every game. He was among the top players in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for rebounding. By the end of his college career, Derek was one of Georgia's all-time best. He had a very high field goal percentage, meaning he made a lot of his shots.
Professional Basketball Career
Derek Ogbeide began his professional career in 2019. He has played for several teams in different countries.
Starting in Cyprus
Derek started with AEK Larnaca in the Cypriot League. He had a very successful first season. He then signed for another year with the team. In his second season, he averaged 14 points and over 10 rebounds per game. He also blocked many shots. During this time, he helped AEK Larnaca win the Cypriot Cup.
Moving to Israel and Greece
In May 2021, Derek joined Hapoel Eilat in Israel for a short period. After that, in June 2021, he signed with PAOK in Greece. PAOK plays in the Greek Basket League and the Basketball Champions League. Derek played for PAOK until January 2022.
Playing in Turkey and Italy
In January 2022, Derek moved to Turkey. He signed with Torku Konyaspor in the Turkish Basketball First League. He continued to show strong performance, averaging good points, rebounds, and blocks. Later in 2022, he signed with Rimini in Italy. This team plays in the Serie A2. He averaged 15.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game there.
Recent Teams
On July 6, 2023, Derek signed with Pistoia Basket 2000 in Italy's top league, the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds per game. In July 2024, he joined Cedevita Olimpija in Slovenia. Finally, in November 2024, he signed with Hapoel Jerusalem. He currently plays for them in the Israeli Basketball Premier League and the EuroCup.
Derek's Personal Life
Derek Ogbeide is the son of Martin and Tina Ogbeide. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Derek has lived in many different places throughout his life. These places include London, Sweden, Nigeria, Atlanta, Maryland, and Canada. He eventually moved back to Atlanta before his professional career began.
