Derek Ogbeide's Early Basketball Journey
High School Hoops in Canada and Georgia
Derek Ogbeide started playing basketball in high school. In grade 9 and 10, he played for Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School in Toronto, Canada. Later, for his junior and senior years (grade 11 and 12), he moved to Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Georgia.
During his final year at Pebblebrook, Derek was a star player. He scored about 15 points per game and grabbed over 10 rebounds. He also blocked nearly 5 shots per game. Because of his great performance, he was named one of the best players in his state.
College Career at the University of Georgia
From 2015 to 2019, Derek played college basketball for the University of Georgia. In his first year, he missed some games due to a shoulder injury. Even so, he was one of the best rebounders and shot blockers on his team.
In his second year, Derek became a starter in almost every game. He was one of the top rebounders in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). By the end of his college career, Derek was known for his excellent shooting accuracy. He made over half of his shots from the field.
Derek Ogbeide's Professional Basketball Career
Starting Strong in Cyprus
Derek began his professional career in 2019 with AEK Larnaca in the Cypriot Basketball League. He had a very successful first season. He played so well that the team signed him for another year.
In his second season with AEK Larnaca, Derek continued to shine. He averaged 14 points and over 10 rebounds per game. He also blocked many shots, ranking second in the league for blocks. That year, he helped AEK Larnaca win the Cypriot Cup. He was also named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2021.
Playing in Israel and Greece
After his time in Cyprus, Derek joined the Israeli club Hapoel Eilat in May 2021. He played with them until the end of that season.
In June 2021, Derek signed with PAOK Thessaloniki, a team in Greece. They played in both the Greek Basket League and the Basketball Champions League. He played with PAOK for several months before leaving the team in January 2022.
Moving to Turkey and Italy
In January 2022, Derek signed with Konyaspor in the Turkish Basketball First League. He had a strong performance there, averaging nearly 14 points and 8 rebounds per game. He was also one of the top shot blockers in that league.
Later in 2022, Derek moved to Italy to play for Rinascita Basket Rimini in the Serie A2 league. He continued to be a key player, scoring over 15 points and grabbing almost 9 rebounds per game.
In July 2023, he joined Pistoia Basket 2000 in Italy's top league, Lega Basket Serie A. He averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds per game, ranking second in the league for rebounds.
Recent Teams and Current Club
In July 2024, Derek signed with KK Cedevita Olimpija, a team that plays in both the Slovenian Basketball League and the ABA League.
In November 2024, he joined Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel. This team also plays in the EuroCup.
As of April 2025, Derek Ogbeide is playing for the Italian club Trapani Shark.
Derek Ogbeide's Personal Life
Derek Ogbeide is the son of Martin and Tina Ogbeide. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Derek has lived in many different places throughout his life. These places include London, Sweden, Nigeria, Atlanta, Maryland, and Canada. He eventually moved back to Atlanta.
