Derek Slaughter is an American politician who serves as the mayor of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He made history by becoming the first African-American to hold this important position. Before becoming mayor, Mr. Slaughter was a city councilman and taught math at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Early Life and Education
Derek Slaughter was born in 1981 and grew up in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He went to Williamsport Area High School and finished in 1999.
College and Beyond
After high school, he studied at Pennsylvania State University. In 2003, he earned a bachelor's degree in Information Science and Technology. He also studied Spanish.
Later, he went to the University of Maryland, College Park. There, he earned a master's degree in Education.
Teaching and Coaching
Mr. Slaughter returned to Williamsport after college. He became a math teacher at Williamsport Area High School. He also taught at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
From 2007 to 2016, he coached the girls' high school basketball team. He continued teaching even while he was running for mayor.
Becoming Mayor of Williamsport
In March 2019, Derek Slaughter announced he wanted to become mayor. He ran as a member of the Democratic Party.
Election and Swearing-In
On November 6, 2019, it was announced that Mr. Slaughter had won the election. He officially became the mayor of Williamsport on January 6, 2020.
He was re-elected for another term in 2023. As mayor, he works to lead the city and make decisions for its residents.
Family Life
Derek Slaughter is married to Vanessa Slaughter. They got married in 2011. They have three children: one son and two daughters. His mother's name is Judy Slaughter.
