Derek Smart facts for kids
Derek K. Smart is an American video game designer. He is known for creating several video game series. He is the president and main developer of 3000AD, Inc., an independent game company located in Aventura, Florida. He also leads and invests in Quest Online, another video game development company. Smart is an independent game designer and software developer.
His Work in Games
In 1996, Take 2 Interactive released his first game, Battlecruiser 3000AD. Before the game came out, Smart and Take 2 had a disagreement about its early release. They later settled this issue outside of court.
Through his company, 3000AD, Smart has developed nineteen games so far. Many of these games are part of his different game series. He also helped finish the online game Alganon and its expansion pack, Rise of the Ourobani, through his company Quest Online.
Smart also made a deal with DC Comics. This led to several comic books being created for his Line of Defense games. A comic for Alganon was also released.
Smart is a lifelong member of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). He was also on the board of the IGDA chapter in Miami.

Online Discussions
Computer Games Magazine once wrote that Smart became well-known for actively discussing his games online. He also shared strong opinions about those who disagreed with him. In 2012, an article by Russ Pitts for Polygon explored how his online discussions sometimes differed from his real-life professional image.
In 2015, Smart took part in a live panel discussion hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists. On this panel, he spoke about how some media outlets were describing certain online groups.
Since July 2015, Smart has shared his views about the crowd-funded game Star Citizen. He has written several blog posts about this project, which has received a lot of media attention.
