Dermatophyllum is a group of flowering plants that are part of the pea family, known as Fabaceae. These plants were once grouped with another genus called Sophora, but scientists later decided they were different enough to have their own genus. One of the most well-known species in this group is Dermatophyllum secundiflorum, often called the Texas Mountain Laurel.

What is Dermatophyllum?
Dermatophyllum plants are usually shrubs or small trees. They are famous for their beautiful, colorful flowers that often bloom in spring. These plants are native to parts of North America, especially the southwestern United States and Mexico. They are very tough and can grow in dry, rocky places.
Where Does it Grow?
Most Dermatophyllum species are found in dry, sunny areas. For example, the Texas Mountain Laurel (Dermatophyllum secundiflorum) grows naturally in Texas, New Mexico, and parts of Mexico. It likes rocky hillsides and canyons. Other species might be found in Arizona or other desert-like regions. These plants are well-suited to places with not much water.
Beautiful Flowers and Seeds
The flowers of Dermatophyllum plants are often a lovely purple or blue color, and they grow in clusters. They have a very sweet, grape-like smell that attracts bees and other pollinators. After the flowers fade, they produce hard, woody seedpods. Inside these pods are bright red or orange seeds.
Are the Seeds Safe?
It's important to know that the seeds of Dermatophyllum plants, especially the Texas Mountain Laurel, are poisonous if eaten. They contain a substance called cytisine, which can be harmful. While the seeds are very pretty and are sometimes used in jewelry, they should never be put in the mouth or swallowed. It's always best to admire these plants and their seeds from a distance.
