Dermot Gallagher's Referee Journey
Dermot Gallagher started his refereeing career in 1978. An experienced former linesman, Dick Bartlett, suggested he try it.
Becoming a Professional Referee
In 1985, Dermot joined the list of assistant referees for the Football League. Five years later, when he was 33, he became a full Football League referee. He quickly started handling important matches in the top division. When the new Premier League began in 1992, he was chosen to be one of its referees.
In 1994, after only three and a half seasons, he was added to the FIFA list. This meant he could referee international matches.
First Premier League Match
Dermot's very first Premier League match was on August 19, 1992. Coventry City played against Tottenham Hotspur. Coventry won 2-0, with both goals scored by John Williams.
Big Matches and International Games
Dermot refereed several important matches during his career:
- In 1995, he was the referee for the FA Charity Shield match at Wembley. Everton beat Blackburn Rovers.
- Also in 1995, he refereed the FA Trophy Final at Wembley. Woking won against Kidderminster Harriers after extra time.
- Later that year, he was in charge of the Under 20 World Cup Final in Qatar. Argentina won 2-0 against Brazil.
- In 1996, he refereed the FA Cup Final at Wembley. Manchester United beat Liverpool with a goal from Eric Cantona.
- That summer, he also refereed matches in the European Championships held in England.
Overcoming an Injury
During a game in 1996, Dermot suffered a serious injury. He was out of action for several months but returned to refereeing in early 1997.
International Rules and Retirement
Even though Dermot was born in the Republic of Ireland, he represented the English Football Association. This meant he could not referee international games involving England. However, he was allowed to referee a friendly match between his birth country, the Republic of Ireland, and Russia on February 13, 2002. This game took place at Lansdowne Road.
Dermot retired from the FIFA list at the end of 2002 because he reached the mandatory retirement age of 45. After retiring, he often attends matches to support the Republic of Ireland football team.
Continuing in the Premier League
Dermot continued to referee in the Premier League for several more years. He had the special honor of being a referee in every Premier League season since it started. In 2006, he was the first referee since 1994 to be allowed to continue past the usual domestic retirement age of 48.
Since 2006, he has also refereed in the "Masters Football" tournaments. These are six-a-side football competitions for former professional players, shown on Sky TV.
His last Premier League match was on May 13, 2007. It was a game between Liverpool and Charlton Athletic, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
