Dermot Gallagher's Referee Career

Starting His Journey as a Referee

Dermot Gallagher began his refereeing career in 1978. An experienced former linesman, Dick Bartlett, suggested he try it. In 1985, Dermot joined the Football League's list of assistant referees. Five years later, when he was 33, he became a main referee for the Football League.

By his second season, he was already refereeing important games in the top division. When the new Premier League started in 1992, he was chosen to be one of its referees. He quickly moved up and was added to the FIFA list in 1994. This happened after only three and a half seasons as a Football League referee.

His very first Premier League game was on August 19, 1992. Coventry City won 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur, with both goals scored by John Williams.

Big Games and Important Moments

Dermot Gallagher refereed many significant matches during his career. In 1995, he was in charge of the FA Charity Shield game. This match was between Everton and Blackburn Rovers at Wembley. Everton won with a goal from Vinny Samways.

In the same year, he refereed the FA Trophy Final, also at Wembley. Woking beat Kidderminster Harriers 2-1 after extra time. Later that year, he oversaw the Under 20 World Cup Final in Qatar. Argentina won that game 2-0 against Brazil.

In 1996, Dermot was chosen to referee the 1996 FA Cup Final. This big game was between Liverpool and Manchester United at Wembley. Manchester United won 1-0 with a goal from Eric Cantona. That summer, he also refereed games in the European Championships held in England. However, he got a serious injury during a game and was unable to referee again until early 1997.

International Matches and Retirement

Even though Dermot Gallagher was born in the Republic of Ireland, he represented the English Football Association. This allowed him to referee a friendly international match between his birth country, the Republic of Ireland, and Russia. This game took place on February 13, 2002, at Lansdowne Road. Referees are not allowed to officiate international games involving the country they represent.

Dermot retired from the FIFA list at the end of 2002. This was because he reached the mandatory retirement age of 45 for international referees. After retiring, he often attends matches to support the Republic of Ireland football team.

He continued to serve as a Premier League referee for several more years. He holds the special record of having refereed in every Premier League season since it began. In 2006, he was the first referee since 1994 to be allowed to continue past the domestic retirement age of 48.

Since 2006, Dermot has also refereed in the annual "Masters Football" tournaments. These are six-a-side games featuring former professional footballers. The games are approved by the FA and shown on Sky TV.

His last Premier League game was on May 13, 2007. It was a match between Liverpool and Charlton Athletic, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
