Dermot O'Brien (born October 23, 1932 – died May 22, 2007) was a talented Irish person. He was famous as both a musician and a Gaelic footballer. He played as a centre-forward for the Louth senior football team. He was also a well-known musician, playing in showbands and performing traditional Irish music.
Dermot O'Brien: A Football Star
Dermot O'Brien was a great Gaelic footballer. He started playing for the Louth team in 1952. He was a regular player until 1960. A broken finger ended his football career that year.
During his time with Louth, he won some big awards. He earned one All-Ireland winner's medal. He also won two Leinster winner's medals. In 1957, Dermot was the captain of the team. He led them to win the All-Ireland title.
At the club level, Dermot played for St Mary's. He won the county club championship three times with them.
Dermot O'Brien: Music Man
Dermot O'Brien loved music from a young age. In 1962, he became a professional musician. His band, called The Clubmen, also became professional. Dermot played the piano accordion for the band. This was a bit different from the usual Irish button accordion.
Dermot O'Brien and The Clubmen became very successful. Their song "The Merry Ploughboy" was a huge hit. It reached the top of the Irish Singles Chart in just seven days. The song stayed at number one for six weeks in late 1966. It was a cover of a traditional Irish song.
In the late 1960s, Dermot started his own TV show. It was on RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster. The show was called The Styles of O'Brien.
Years later, in 2018, students at Brown University in the USA started a club. It was a Dermot O'Brien appreciation club. This shows how much his music was loved.
