Derrick Gainer's Boxing Career
Derrick Gainer was good friends with another famous boxer from Pensacola, Florida, Roy Jones Jr.. Gainer often had his fights on the same night as Roy Jones Jr.'s big matches. This meant more people got to see him box.
Becoming a Featherweight Champion
In the year 2000, Derrick Gainer had a big fight against Freddie Norwood. Gainer won this fight and became the WBA featherweight champion. This was a huge achievement in his career.
He successfully defended his title four times, meaning he won four more fights while still being the champion. However, in 2003, he faced Juan Manuel Márquez. Gainer lost this fight, and Márquez became the new champion.
Fights After the Title
After losing his WBA title, Gainer continued to box. He challenged another champion, Chris John, for the WBA title, but he lost that fight.
His last professional boxing match was in 2007. He won that fight against Carlos Navarro. This match was part of a bigger boxing event that also featured Roy Jones Jr.
