Derrick's Basketball Journey
Derrick Gervin was a tall player, standing 6 feet 8 inches (203 cm) tall. He played college basketball at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). After college, he hoped to play in the NBA.
Joining the NBA
In the 1985 NBA draft, Derrick was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was the 90th player picked overall. He later played two seasons in the NBA for the New Jersey Nets. This was from 1989 to 1991. During his time with the Nets, he played 77 games. He averaged 8.8 points per game, which means he scored almost 9 points each game he played.
Success Overseas
After his time in the NBA, Derrick Gervin played basketball in many different countries. He became a star player in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.
- In 1995, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Israeli League. He played for a team called Hapoel Gvat/Yagur B.C. and scored an amazing 27.0 points per game that season.
- He also led the Israeli League in scoring two times. This means he scored more points than any other player in the league in both 1996 and 1998.
College Recognition
Derrick's college team, the UTSA Roadrunners, honored him in a special way. In 2006, they retired his jersey number, 30. This means no other player on the UTSA team will ever wear the number 30 again. It's a big honor for a college athlete.
Family Connection
Derrick Gervin comes from a basketball family. His older brother is George Gervin. George was also a famous basketball player. He played in both the ABA and the NBA from 1972 to 1986. George Gervin is known as "The Iceman" and is one of the greatest scorers in basketball history.
