Derrick Gervin, born on March 28, 1963, is a former professional basketball player from Detroit, USA. He played in the famous National Basketball Association (NBA). He was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Israeli Basketball Premier League in 1995. Derrick was a top scorer in that league twice, in 1996 and 1998.

Derrick Gervin's Basketball Journey

Derrick Gervin was a talented basketball player who stood 6 feet 8 inches tall. He played as a forward. He went to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) for college.

Starting His Professional Career

In the 1985 NBA draft, Derrick was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was the 90th player picked overall. Later, he played two seasons in the NBA for the New Jersey Nets from 1989 to 1991. During his time with the Nets, he played 77 games. He scored an average of 8.8 points in each game.

Playing in Other Leagues

Besides the NBA, Derrick Gervin also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for several teams there, including the Evansville Thunder and the Santa Barbara Islanders. He also played for the Fort Wayne Fury, La Crosse Catbirds, and Oklahoma City Cavalry. His time in the CBA was from 1985 to 1997.

Winning a CBA Championship

In 1992, Derrick helped his team, the La Crosse Catbirds, win a CBA championship. This was a big achievement for him and his team. In 1990, he was also chosen for the All-CBA First Team. This means he was one of the best players in the league that year. He was also the top scorer in the CBA in 1990.

Success in Israel

Derrick Gervin also had a very successful career playing basketball in Israel. In 1995, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He played for a team called Hapoel Gvat/Yagur B.C. that year. He scored an impressive 27.0 points per game. He was also the top scorer in the Israeli Basketball League two times, in 1996 and again in 1998.

Family and Legacy

In 2006, UTSA honored Derrick Gervin by retiring his jersey number 30. This means no other player at UTSA will wear that number again. It's a special way to remember his contributions to the university's basketball program. Derrick's older brother, George Gervin, was also a very famous basketball player. George played in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the NBA for many years.
