Derrick Westenra, 5th Baron Rossmore facts for kids
Derrick Warner William Westenra (born February 7, 1853, in Dublin, Ireland – died January 31, 1921, at Rossmore Park, Ireland) was an important Irish noble. He was also a soldier and an author. For a time, he was known as The Hon. Derrick Westenra. He was also a member of the Orange Order, a Protestant organization.
Life and Career
Derrick was the second son of the 3rd Baron Rossmore. His mother was Josephine Julia Helen. He went to school at Rugby School.
He joined the military as a lieutenant in the Monaghan Militia. This was a local army group. He left this role in 1872. He then became a sub-lieutenant in the 9th Lancers.
Becoming a Baron
On March 28, 1874, Derrick's older brother Henry died in a horse riding accident. Because of this, Derrick became the 5th Baron Rossmore. This title was part of the Peerage of Ireland. He also became the 4th Baron Rossmore in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. His brother had been an officer in the 1st Life Guards. Derrick was moved to that same regiment to take his brother's place. He left the army on October 23, 1875.
Later Public Roles
Lord Rossmore was given an important role in the 5th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers. He became their Honorary Colonel on July 29, 1896. This group used to be the Monaghan Militia.
On June 18, 1897, he became the Lord Lieutenant of Monaghan. This was a high-ranking official position in his home county. He held this important job until he passed away.
Interests and Writings
Lord Rossmore enjoyed sports. He was one of the first people to play polo in England. He played this game in Richmond Park in London. He was also a well-known member of the Orange Order. This is a Protestant organization. In 1912, he wrote a book called Things I Can Tell.
Family Life
Derrick Warner William Westenra married Mittie Naylor. They got married on June 14, 1882. Their wedding took place at All Saints' Church in London, England.
They had three children:
