The Deshon-Allyn House is a historic building located at 613 Williams Street in New London, Connecticut. It was built in 1829 for a whaling ship captain. This house is a great example of a mix of two older building styles: Federal and Greek Revival. Today, it is part of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 28, 1970. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.

About the Deshon-Allyn House

The Deshon-Allyn House stands on the grounds of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum. It is on the east side of Williams Street, just north of downtown New London. This large building has two and a half stories. It is made from rough-cut stone. The corners have special stone blocks called quoins. The windows and doors are framed with smooth granite.

What Does It Look Like?

The house has a unique roof that is mostly flat on top, called a hipped roof. It also has gabled dormer windows that stick out from the roof. Four brick chimneys rise from the roof. The main entrance is set back from the front of the house. It has Ionic columns on each side. There are also narrow windows next to the door, called sidelights. Above the door is a window that lets light in, called a transom. Above the entrance, you'll see a small Palladian window. This type of window has three parts, with the middle part being taller.

Who Lived Here?

The Deshon-Allyn House was built in 1829 for Captain Daniel Deshon. He was the captain of a whaling ship from New London. The house shows off the elegant style of late Federal architecture. In 1851, another whaling captain, Lyman Allyn, bought the house. He became very wealthy by investing in railroads and other businesses. The art museum that now owns the house was created by his daughter to honor his memory.

Modern Connections

More recently, the Ocean Exploration Trust set up its offices inside the Deshon-Allyn House. This organization was started in 2008 by Robert Ballard. He is a famous ocean explorer.
