The Story of Destined

A Dangerous Secret Revealed

The story of Destined begins right after the last book, Illusions, ended. Laurel, Tamani, Shar, and Chelsea are with Yuki. Yuki is a Winter fairy who is trapped in a circle of salt. She tells Tamani that she wanted to be honest with him. Yuki also says that she and Tamani are alike. They have both been used by others who do not truly care for them.

Laurel arrives and asks Yuki what Klea wants. Yuki reveals that Klea already has what she needs. Yuki also shares a shocking secret. Shar did something to Laurel's human mother. This made it possible for Laurel's parents to adopt her. Tamani promises Laurel he did not know about this. He insists Shar is not a monster. But Tamani will do anything to protect Avalon and his family.

The Attack on Avalon

Laurel goes home, while Chelsea stays with Tamani and Shar to watch Yuki. Yuki tries to upset Chelsea. She says Chelsea will always be second to Laurel in David's eyes. Tamani comforts Chelsea. The next morning, Laurel returns. Chelsea goes home, wanting to tell Jamison about Yuki. But Shar warns that opening the gate to Avalon could reveal its location to Klea.

Suddenly, a troll breaks into the apartment. Klea, who Shar calls 'Callista', follows. She shoots Shar in the shoulder. Shar tells Tamani to get Laurel away. Yuki then breaks free from the salt circle. As they escape from more trolls, Tamani explains that Klea/Callista is an exiled Fall fairy. Katya had told Laurel about her.

A Race Against Time

Back home, Tamani tells Silve, another guard, that Shar needs help. Laurel explains everything to her parents. David also comes over. Tamani gets a message from Shar. It says Klea took Yuki, and Shar followed them. Shar sends two pictures, one showing young fairy sprouts. Then Shar calls Tamani. Tamani listens as Shar confronts Klea.

Klea explains that she stole a special seed. She faked her own death and used cloning. This allowed her to create a Winter fairy sprout. She also made special liquids to make trolls immune to fairy magic. Klea reveals that Yuki got the gate's location from Laurel's mind. This was why Laurel had headaches. Shar tells Tamani to tell his family he loves them. Then Klea defeats Shar. Tamani realizes Shar's words were an order: go to Avalon.

Chelsea and David insist on going to the gate with Tamani and Laurel. Jamison opens the gate, letting Chelsea and David enter Avalon. Queen Marion arrives and orders Chelsea and David to be removed. Jamison warns that Klea is coming with many magic-immune trolls. He says they need all the help they can get. They argue, but Marion refuses to believe Klea is a real threat.

The Battle for Avalon

Jamison takes Tamani and the others to the Winter Palace. He asks David about King Arthur. He shows them Excalibur, a special sword. Excalibur cannot touch fairies, and fairies cannot touch it. A human must use it. David removes Excalibur from the stone. Jamison tells Yasmine to stay with Marion for safety.

The trolls arrive, armed with guns. Jamison tells David to defend the gate. He says David cannot be harmed while holding Excalibur. Chelsea kisses David, worried she might not get another chance. Tamani and the guards fight alongside David at the gate. Soon, no more trolls come through. Instead, sleeping gas canisters are thrown. Laurel, David, Tamani, and Chelsea avoid the gas. Fairies breathe out oxygen and breathe in carbon dioxide. Jamison and other fairies are knocked out.

Tamani sends Chelsea to the Academy to warn the fairies there. He, David, and Laurel take Jamison to Tamani's mother, Rhoslyn. She helps Laurel try to wake Jamison. David and Tamani fight trolls that got past the gate. David saves Tamani after a troll hurts Tamani's shoulder. Jamison is still unconscious, so they must go to the Academy.

They walk through Summer Square. It has an illusion to make trolls attack each other. As they walk, Laurel finds Tamani's niece, Rowen. Rowen's mother, Tamani's sister, is gone.

A Desperate Plan

The illusion is too complex, so they turn back. They take a different route to the Academy. Tamani tells Rowen to disguise herself and go to Rhoslyn's for safety. At the Academy, trolls attack them. David fights them as Tamani, Laurel, and Jamison get inside. But David gets locked out. Tamani promises Laurel that David will be okay because he has the sword. Laurel finds Chelsea, who is unharmed. The Fall fairies have taken the trolls' guns.

Outside, David is getting tired from holding the sword. Laurel, Chelsea, and Tamani pull him onto a balcony. This gets him away from the trolls so he can rest. When David takes off his damaged shirt, the Fall fairies are surprised to see he is human. Laurel helps David and Tamani with their injuries. Just as David is about to fight again, the trolls start falling.

Klea, with Yuki, sets the Academy on fire. This forces the fairies to leave. Tamani says Klea's next target will be the Winter Palace. They all notice a strange, red gas leaking into the Academy. David cuts a doorway into the greenhouse. Everyone starts dragging unconscious fairies to safety. Laurel is slowed trying to save Mara. Yeardley orders the doorway blocked to keep the poison out. David does so, and Tamani screams at them to stop. Upset, Tamani goes to find Klea. He wants to stop her or be stopped by her.

The Cure and the Choice

Laurel asks Chelsea where David and Tamani are. She is tired from saving Mara. Chelsea says they both got out, but she cannot see Tamani. It is revealed that Katya, who looks like Laurel, did not escape the fire. Laurel realizes Tamani must have thought Katya was her. He might think Laurel is gone.

Tamani attacks Klea. Klea tells Yuki to attack him, but Yuki is not skilled enough. Just as Tamani is about to defeat Klea, Laurel arrives and tells him to stop. Klea tells David she wants to change Avalon's old ways. She asks him to join her, since most fairies look down on humans. David refuses. Laurel tries to talk to Yuki. Yuki ignores her and traps David and Tamani. But she asks Klea not to hurt them.

Jamison arrives, weak but awake. He is not afraid of Yuki. He tells Yuki that Klea was very smart before she was exiled. She could have done much good. He asks Yuki if Klea truly loves her. He wonders if Klea would still love her if Yuki left her plans. Jamison says he voted against exiling Klea.

Yuki knocks Jamison unconscious. Klea attacks Tamani. She is about to defeat him until Yuki steps in. In anger, Klea seriously injures Yuki. She also hurts Tamani with a dangerous blade. Klea reveals the blade is poisoned. She says they will die in hours. Only a special cure, the viridefaeco potion, can save them. Klea says she will save Tamani if Laurel agrees to join her. Laurel remembers Yeardley saying no one knows how to make the viridefaeco potion anymore. Klea explains that her "vaccines" for the trolls were what defeated them. Laurel asks what Klea wants her to do. Klea tells her to find Marion and Yasmine. She wants Laurel to tell them to trade their lives for Klea's cures. Klea wants a new Avalon without Winter fairies. Laurel agrees, though Tamani and David believe she is lying.

Laurel leaves. Yuki apologizes to Tamani for her part in things. She says she does not want to die with Tamani hating her. She adds that she had planned to join Tamani against Klea. Tamani apologizes for not giving her that chance.

Yuki asks Tamani if he has anything metal. He gives her his knife. She changes it into something that frightens Tamani. Yuki tells him she loves him, then she passes away in his arms.

Laurel tells Chelsea to go to the Winter Palace. She tells her to instruct the guards not to let Marion or Yasmine leave until Chelsea confirms they are safe. Laurel goes to the World Tree. She cuts her hand and its bark to make a connection. This usually takes hours of meditation. She asks for help with Klea's poison. The Silent Ones tell her to think like Klea. One voice begs her to "save his son." Laurel realizes she must understand the poison to find the cure.

She returns to Klea and the others. She purposely gets some poison from Tamani's wound. At the Academy, she asks Fiona for help. Fiona is a fairy who was trying to create the viridefaeco potion. Fiona has the base, and she knows it is correct. But she is missing a key ingredient. Laurel knows it is not an extinct plant. She is sure she has seen it. Suddenly, she realizes the missing ingredient is humans.

She asks Chelsea for some of her blood. The viridefaeco potion is completed. Laurel cures herself. Then she rushes back to Tamani and Klea. She gives the cure to Tamani. After a few moments, he is also cured. Klea, however, does not let Laurel cure her. She refuses to live in Laurel's "perfect world," and she passes away.

Jamison finally wakes up. Laurel explains everything that happened. Marion and Yasmine arrive. They are told what happened. Marion says Chelsea and David cannot leave Avalon. David used Excalibur, and humans cannot be trusted with such big secrets. David threatens to use Excalibur to cut the gates. But he admits he cannot do it because it would leave Avalon unprotected. Jamison offers to open the gates anyway. Marion says he will be punished for treason if he does. He still offers, but Tamani refuses him. Tamani asks everyone to meet in the Gate Garden in an hour.

Jamison tells Laurel he might not be around next time she comes to Avalon. He has been planning his own way to change the fairy leadership. He chose Laurel to be the scion because she was friends with Tamani. He has been teaching Yasmine to respect all fairies. He is willing to face consequences to make his idea for a better Avalon happen.

A New Beginning

At the gate, David asks Laurel if they will ever get back together. He already knows the answer. Laurel was not completely sure until she thought Tamani was gone. But now she is certain. Tamani returns after telling Shar's family what happened. He tells Laurel he can no longer be her protector. His feelings get in the way. Laurel tells him she does not care if he is her protector. She begs him not to leave her. She says she wants him forever.

Chelsea arrives. She was told to bring all the Spring and Summer fairies to watch what happens. When Marion arrives, she orders Jamison and Yasmine to arrest Tamani and the others. Both refuse. Tamani then tells Laurel, Chelsea, and David to gather around him. He pulls his transformed knife from his pocket. Yuki turned it into a key. A lock appears on the gate. Tamani opens it, hides the key, and the four of them walk out of Avalon. Laurel puts Chelsea’s hand in David’s. Then she takes Tamani’s hand. She feels that since she is with him, she is already home.

Years later, David writes a letter to Chelsea. Chelsea has just had a daughter, Sophie, with her husband, Jason. David has become a doctor. But he is still affected by Avalon. So he has asked Laurel to create a special drink. This drink will erase all memories of fairies and Avalon from his mind. He wants to be a good husband to his fiancée, Rose. He does not want his story to be completely lost. So he has written it down for Sophie. Chelsea can do what she wants with it: burn it, hide it, or publish it. Lastly, he asks Chelsea to introduce him to Tamani if she can. He misses him already.

Main Characters
