How Deutsch Inc. Started (1969-2019)
In 1969, David Deutsch started his own advertising company in New York City. He used to be a creative director at another famous ad agency called Ogilvy & Mather. His company first became known for making great print ads, like those you see in magazines.
New Ideas and Growth
In 1983, David's son, Donny Deutsch, joined the company. Donny helped the agency grow beyond just print ads. It started to work on many different types of advertising, including digital ads for computers and the internet.
In July 1989, the company changed its name to just "Deutsch." This also showed that Donny Deutsch was taking a bigger role. At this time, the company started focusing more on television commercials.
In 1995, Deutsch opened a new office in Los Angeles. This helped them reach more clients across the country.
New Departments and Partnerships
In 1996, Deutsch created two new departments:
- iDeutsch: This group focused on interactive advertising, which means ads that people can interact with, like online games or special websites.
- directDeutsch: This group handled direct marketing, which sends ads straight to people, like through mail or email.
In 1999, Deutsch teamed up with hip-hop businessman Russell Simmons. They created a joint company called dRush. Their goal was to make ads that would appeal to young people.
Leadership Changes
In 2006, Linda Sawyer became the CEO of Deutsch. Then, in October 2009, Val DiFebo was named CEO of the New York office of Deutsch. She had been working at the company since 1992.
In 2015, Donny Deutsch stepped down as Chairman of the agency. Linda Sawyer took over his role as Chairman. Also in 2015, Kim Getty became the president of the Deutsch LA office.
In January 2017, Mike Sheldon became the Chairman of Deutsch's North America offices. In April, Deutsch started a new group called Great Machine. This group uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create new and exciting ads.
In late 2019, Mike Sheldon left his role. Kim Getty became the CEO of the Deutsch LA office, and Val DiFebo continued as CEO of Deutsch NY.
In October 2020, Deutsch Inc. officially split into two separate companies: Deutsch LA and Deutsch NY.
Deutsch NY Today (2020-Present)
Deutsch NY works with many well-known companies. Some of their clients include AB InBev (which makes drinks), Microsoft (a technology company), PNC Bank, and Reebok (a sports brand).
The company uses a lot of data and new technology to create ads. They are especially interested in using artificial intelligence (AI) for their work. They also focus on making content remotely, which means their teams can work from different places, especially important after the COVID outbreak.
Famous Ad Campaigns
Deutsch NY has created many memorable ad campaigns:
- IKEA's "Dining Room" (1994): Deutsch made an ad for the furniture store IKEA. This ad was special because it was one of the first times that gay characters were shown in a mainstream TV commercial.
- TNT's "Mob City" (2013): Deutsch helped promote the TV show "Mob City." They created a three-day event on Twitter that brought the show's story to life online. This was a new way to tell stories digitally.
- "Art Heist for Good" (2015): For a charity called Water is Life, Deutsch created a campaign to help people get clean water. They took art from a very poor area in Kenya and sold it. The money raised was used to build clean water systems there.
- Sherwin-Williams' "Pinterest Yard Sale" (2016): Deutsch created a fun campaign for Krylon paint. They made a "yard sale" on Pinterest, where people could find ideas for painting projects. This campaign won awards.
