Devil Town is a small, quiet community in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. It's an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Devil Town is located about 5 kilometers northwest of a larger town called Wooster. A small stream named Clear Creek flows right through this area.

Discovering Devil Town

Devil Town might sound like a mysterious place, but it's actually a peaceful spot in Ohio. It's known for its interesting history and how it got its unique name.

A Glimpse into the Past

This area first saw land sales way back in 1830. When it was first settled, the community had a different name: "Tannersville." This name came from a tannery that was set up there. A tannery is a place where animal hides are turned into leather.

Tannersville was a busy little place in its early days. Besides the tannery, it had other important businesses. There was a blacksmith shop where metal goods were made and repaired. The community also had a grocery store for supplies, a saloon (a type of old-fashioned restaurant or bar), a post office for mail, and a mill for grinding grain.

How Devil Town Got Its Name

Later on, Tannersville became known by its current name, "Devil Town." There's an interesting story about how this happened. One popular explanation is that a person living there often used the word "Devil" when they were talking. This habit was so noticeable that people started calling the whole community "Devil Town."

Devil Town Today

Today, Devil Town is much smaller than it used once to be. A road called Mechanicsburg Road runs through the community, and some homes are located along it. Not much remains of the original businesses and buildings that made up the early settlement. It's mostly a quiet residential area now.
