The Story of Dew's Name
The area where Dew is located was first settled in the 1850s. Pioneers from Alabama moved here to start new lives. Back then, the community had a different name. It was called Avant or Avant Prairie.
Early Post Office and Name Changes
A post office was opened in Avant in 1853. It served the community for many years. However, in January 1885, this post office closed.
In 1870, the community's name changed. It became known as Sunshine. This new name came from a local Methodist church.
How Dew Got Its Name
The post office was reopened in December 1885. At this time, the town's name changed again to Dew. Locals actually wanted to name the town "Drew." They wanted to honor a person who lived there. But, the postal authorities made a mistake. They misread the application and wrote "Dew" instead of "Drew." And that's how the community got its current name!
Population and Education
The community of Dew has seen its population change over the years. In 1947, Dew was at its busiest. About 195 people lived there at that time.
