The Dewey House is a special old building in North Chicago, Illinois. It is also known as Building 29 at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center. This beautiful house was designed by a famous architect named David Adler. It was built for Charles S. Dewey, who later became a member of the U.S. Congress. The house has a classic style called Georgian Revival.

The Dewey House Story

Building a New Home
In 1913, Charles S. Dewey decided to build a new house. He was a real estate developer at the time. He asked David Adler to design it. Adler had already designed homes for some of Dewey's friends.
The house was finished in 1914. It was built near the Naval Station Great Lakes. Charles Dewey was stationed there during World War I. He named his new home "Over Yonder." The Dewey family lived in the mansion until 1918.
How the Government Acquired the House
While Charles Dewey was serving in the Navy, the government needed his land. They wanted to make the naval base bigger. The government used a process called eminent domain. This means the government can take private land for public use, but they must pay for it.
Dewey's wife had to leave the house by the end of 1918. In 1921, the Dewey family received $192,950 for their property. This was the payment for the land.
The House Becomes Part of a Hospital
Later in 1921, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs was created. This agency helps military veterans. On April 17, 1924, the Dewey House property was given to this agency.
When the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center was built, the Dewey House became part of its campus. It was given the name Building 29. The hospital changed the mansion into ten apartments. These apartments were for the hospital staff.
A Historic Landmark
The National Park Service decided the Dewey House was important. On August 8, 1980, they said it was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings that are important to history. The Dewey House was officially added to the list on May 8, 1985.
