DiBella's Old Fashioned Submarines is a popular chain of sub sandwich restaurants. It started in Rochester, New York, in the United States. As of 2021, DiBella's has 44 locations. You can find their restaurants in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Connecticut, and Michigan.

The Story of DiBella's Subs

DiBella's began a long time ago, in 1918. It started as a small, family-run Italian import store. This store also had a delicatessen in Rochester, New York. Over time, the delicious prepared foods they made became much more popular. People loved their sandwiches and other ready-to-eat items. Because of this, the store slowly focused less on selling groceries.

Growing the Business

For many years, until 1998, DiBella's had only one sub shop. This shop was in Henrietta, a suburb of Rochester. But that year, they opened a second store in Greece, another nearby suburb. This was the start of their big expansion!

After that, DiBella's opened more locations around the Rochester area. Then, they expanded to nearby Buffalo. In the late 2000s, they started opening stores outside of New York state. Their first out-of-state locations were in the Pittsburgh area. Later, they opened stores in parts of Ohio and eastern Michigan.

More recently, DiBella's has opened restaurants in Albany and Syracuse. In 2012, they also moved into New England. You can now find their subs in Connecticut, especially in the Hartford and New Haven areas. They also had a few stores in Indianapolis, but those locations are now closed.

What Makes DiBella's Special?

When you walk into a DiBella's store, you might feel like you've stepped back in time! Their restaurants are designed to look like a classic delicatessen from the 1930s or 1940s.

One of the things that makes their subs so good is their bread. DiBella's bakes fresh bread at least twice every day. This means your sandwich is always made with very fresh ingredients. Even the well-known grocery chain Wegmans talked with DiBella's when they were setting up their own sandwich counters. Many people say that Wegmans' sandwiches are quite similar to DiBella's.
