The Story of DiBella's Subs
How DiBella's Began
DiBella's started a long time ago, in 1918. It wasn't a sub shop at first! It began as a small, family-owned Italian import store. This store also had a delicatessen, which sold prepared foods. It was located right in the city of Rochester, New York.
Over the years, the tasty prepared foods became much more popular. People loved the sandwiches and other ready-to-eat items. Because of this, the store slowly changed its focus. It started selling fewer grocery items and more of its famous prepared foods.
Growing into a Sub Shop Chain
For many years, until 1998, DiBella's operated as just one sub shop. This single shop was in Henrietta, a suburb near Rochester. But that year, things began to change quickly. A second store opened in Greece, another nearby suburb.
From there, DiBella's began to grow even more. They opened several new locations around the Rochester area. Soon after, they expanded to Buffalo, another big city in New York.
Expanding Across States
In the late 2000s, DiBella's started opening restaurants outside of New York. Their first out-of-state locations were in the Pittsburgh area. After that, they expanded into parts of Ohio and eastern Michigan.
More recently, DiBella's has opened stores in Albany and Syracuse. In 2012, the company moved into New England. They opened restaurants in Connecticut, especially around the Hartford and New Haven areas. They also tried to open stores in Indianapolis, but those locations have since closed.
