Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Diana is a small community located in Upshur County, Texas, in the United States. It's not a big city with its own government, but more like a collection of smaller neighborhoods working together. You can find Diana north of Longview and south of Ore City, right along U.S. Highway 259.

What is Diana?

The community of Diana is actually made up of several smaller areas. These include places like Ashland, James, Diana, Graceton, Stamps, Sand Hill, Valley View, and even a part of Snow Hill. For a while, people called the area "New Diana," especially in the late 1990s. Many postal services, the local school, and businesses used the name New Diana too. The ZIP Code for Diana is 75640.

Sometimes, people mistakenly call the whole community "New Diana." This name actually belongs to the local school district. The original location of Diana is thought to be a bit further north, where U.S. Highway 726 and U.S. Highway 259 meet.

New Diana School District

The New Diana Independent School District (ISD) was created by combining several smaller local schools. You can find it where U.S. Highway 154 and U.S. Highway 259 cross. When the school was first formed, many students didn't get to finish high school. After grammar school, they often went to work in the local cotton and lumber industries.

Some areas, like Stamps, didn't want to join the new New Diana ISD at first. However, they later had to. Valley View School didn't join until the 1970s. The mascot for New Diana ISD is the Eagle. Even though Diana doesn't have a known population because it's not an official city, the school district is classified as a 3A school by Texas guidelines. New Diana ISD is well-known for its great sports teams and strong academics. Because of this, many students from nearby towns choose to transfer there. The longest and most exciting rivalry for New Diana High School is with its closest neighbor, the Ore City Rebels.

Life in Diana Today

Most of the job opportunities in Diana are still connected to the school, local restaurants, churches, and convenience stores. However, many people who live in Diana travel to bigger nearby cities like Longview or Gilmer for work.

Long-time residents often own a lot of land used for farming or outdoor fun. More recently, new housing developments have popped up. These offer smaller lots and new homes for people moving to Diana from larger cities nearby.
