Who Was Diana Hill?
Early Life and First Marriage
Diana was born around 1760, and her original name was Diana Dietz. In 1781, when she was about 21 years old, she married a man named Haydock Hill. She started her career as an artist in England, creating beautiful tiny portraits.
An Artist in India
After her first husband passed away, Diana moved to Calcutta, which is a big city in India. This was a very long journey back then! In 1788, she married again. Her second husband was Lieutenant Thomas Harriott, a soldier in the 1st Native Infantry. Diana continued to paint miniatures while living in India.
Return to England and Later Years
Diana and her husband, Thomas, returned to England in 1806. She lived the rest of her life in Twickenham, a town near London. Diana Hill passed away on February 10, 1844, when she was about 84 years old.
Her Art and Legacy
Diana Hill was a skilled miniaturist. Her tiny portraits captured the faces of people from her time. One of her paintings, a miniature portrait of her second husband, Lieutenant Thomas Harriott, is still around today. She painted it in 1791. This special artwork is kept safe at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It helps us remember her talent and the art of miniature painting.
