Diarra Kilpatrick is an American actress, writer, and producer. She is known for her creative work in television. Diarra wrote, produced, and starred in the web series American Koko. This show earned her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.
From 2020 to 2023, Diarra also acted in the HBO drama series Perry Mason. More recently, she created, produced, and stars in the BET+ mystery comedy-drama series, Diarra from Detroit.

Growing Up and School
Diarra Kilpatrick was born in 1983 and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She started performing at a young age. When she was 12, she joined the Mosaic Youth Theatre. This is where she performed in her first big production.
For her early schooling, Diarra attended Alonzo W. Bates Academy. This school was for gifted and talented students. Later, she graduated from the Detroit Country Day school. She then went on to study at NYU Tisch to earn her bachelor's degree.
Diarra's Acting Journey
Diarra Kilpatrick began her acting career in films. Her first movie was the drama Forbidden Fruits in 2006. In 2007, she moved to Los Angeles. There, she performed in many local theater plays. These included Three Sisters After Chekhov and The Interlopers.
She also appeared in the comedy-drama film Hollywood, je t'aime in 2009. Diarra made guest appearances on popular TV shows. Some of these shows were House, The Game, and Private Practice. She also acted in independent films like Lila & Eve (2015). In this film, she acted alongside the famous actress Viola Davis.
Creating American Koko
In 2015, Diarra Kilpatrick created her own web series called American Koko. She wrote, produced, and starred in this show. She first launched it on YouTube. The series quickly gained attention. It won the Best Web Series Award at the American Black Film Festival in 2015.
The show then caught the eye of Julius Tennon. He is the husband of actress Viola Davis. Their production company, JuVee Productions, helped develop the series. ABC later bought American Koko. The first season was re-filmed, and a second season was also made. Both seasons premiered online on ABC Digital in June 2017.
In American Koko, Diarra plays a character named Koko. Koko is a "race detective" who works to end racism. This role earned Diarra a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. This award was for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.
Recent TV Roles
After American Koko, Diarra wrote and starred in a TV pilot for Amazon Studios in 2017. This show was called The Climb. It was a comedy set in Detroit. It was about an assistant who wanted to become famous online. However, Amazon did not pick up the series.
Later, Diarra appeared in an episode of The Twilight Zone reboot. She also had a recurring role in the comedy series The Last O.G.. In 2020, she was cast as Clara Drake in the HBO drama series Perry Mason. In 2021, she starred in the TV movie revival of Nash Bridges.
In April 2023, Diarra signed a deal with BET Studios. She then created, produced, and starred in Diarra from Detroit. This is a mystery comedy-drama series set in her hometown. The series has received positive reviews from critics.
