Diego Muñoz Camargo (born around 1529 – died 1599) was an important writer. He wrote the History of Tlaxcala. This was a special illustrated book, called a codex. It told the story of the Tlaxcalan people. The book covered their religion, culture, and military history.
About Diego Muñoz Camargo
Diego Muñoz Camargo was born in Mexico. At that time, Mexico was a Spanish colony. His father was Spanish, and his mother was an Indian woman. This made him a mestizo, meaning he had both Spanish and Indigenous heritage.
He worked as an official interpreter for the Spanish. He especially helped the Franciscans, who were a group of Catholic priests.
A Special Kind of Historian
Diego Muñoz Camargo was also a chronicler. A chronicler is someone who writes down historical events. He was part of a group of mestizo chroniclers. These writers used both Spanish and Indigenous knowledge. They helped record the history of Mexico from different viewpoints.
His book, History of Tlaxcala, is a very important source. It helps us understand the history of the Tlaxcala region in Mexico.
Diego's Many Activities
Muñoz Camargo was a successful businessman. He was good at working with both Spanish and Indigenous communities. This was partly because his father was one of the first Spanish conquerors of Mexico.
He was also active in other areas. He helped teach some Indigenous people who came to Mexico. He also helped move Tlaxcalan people to new areas. He was very interested in the historical writings being made by the Spanish. He combined these with older Tlaxcalan manuscripts. This made him one of the first people to write Tlaxcalan history in Spanish.
