The History of Tlaxcala (Spanish: Historia de Tlaxcala) is an important book. It was written in Spanish with pictures. Diego Muñoz Camargo created it around the year 1585. This book tells the story of the Tlaxcala people.
About the History of Tlaxcala
Muñoz Camargo's work is split into three main parts:
- "Relaciones Geográficas" or "Descripción de la ciudad y provincia de Tlaxcala": This part is a Spanish text. Camargo wrote it between 1581 and 1584. He was answering questions from King Philip II of Spain about the land and people.
- "Tlaxcala Calendar": This section has many pictures. It includes descriptions in both Spanish and Nahuatl languages.
- "Tlaxcala Codex": This part also has many pictures. It also has descriptions in both Spanish and Nahuatl.
The Lienzo de Tlaxcala
Another key source for Tlaxcalan history is the Lienzo de Tlaxcala. This was a special picture book from the colonial time. It was made in the second half of the 1500s. The city council (called a cabildo) of Tlaxcala asked for it to be made.
We know that three copies of the Lienzo were created. One copy was meant to be a gift for King Charles V in Spain. A second copy was to go to Mexico City for the viceroy. The last copy was kept safe by the Tlaxcalan city council.
Sadly, all three of these original copies are now lost. We only know about the Lienzo today because of a copy made in 1773. Manuel de Ylláñez made this reproduction. This copy is now kept by the local government in Tlaxcala.
